Why Reviewing Your Will Every Few Years Matters

Why Reviewing Your Will Every Few Years Matters

Many people take comfort in having written a Will, viewing it as a task that has been completed and can be set aside. However, a Will should not be seen as a one-off document.

Key Insight

A Will should not be treated as something you complete once and forget. As your assets, family circumstances, and legislation evolve, your Will must be reviewed to ensure it continues to reflect your wishes and provide effective protection.

Many people take comfort in having written a Will, viewing it as a task that has been completed and can be set aside.

However, a Will should not be seen as a one-off document.

Over time, circumstances change. Assets increase or decrease in value, family situations evolve, and legislation may be updated. A Will that was appropriate five or ten years ago may no longer reflect current intentions or provide the level of protection required.

For example, individuals who have acquired property, started a business or accumulated additional savings may find that their estate is now structured very differently. Without a review, these changes may not be properly reflected.

Similarly, changes in family circumstances — such as marriage, divorce, or the arrival of children or grandchildren — can significantly affect how assets should be distributed. In some cases, failing to update a Will may result in unintended outcomes.

There is also the risk that outdated Wills fail to take advantage of available planning opportunities. As legislation evolves, so too do the strategies available to protect assets and structure estates efficiently.

Regular reviews allow individuals to ensure that their estate is structured appropriately and that their wishes are clearly documented. It also provides an opportunity to consider whether additional planning, such as Trusts or other arrangements, may now be suitable.

A simple review every few years can help ensure that a Will continues to reflect both current circumstances and long-term intentions, giving clarity and peace of mind.

Client Testimonial

“Having seen John of Legacy Wills present at a property event, it was clear he had both the breadth of knowledge and experience and also the ability to make a very dry subject both understandable and engaging. That’s a tough call when talking about Wills, Trusts and death. John produced Wills and POA’s for myself and my wife in a timely, effective and reasonable manner. I have subsequently recommended him to numerous colleagues and friends to cut out the jargon and challenges surrounding this critical protection, which is too often deferred or neglected.”
