The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your heart and circulation for adults aged 40 to 74 in England who have not already been diagnosed with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or high blood pressure. You should be invited every five years.
- It takes about 20 to 30 minutes and usually covers blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and waist, with a ten-year cardiovascular risk score.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. It is generally considered high at 140/90 or above in a clinic, or 135/85 or above at home.
- Many pharmacies in England offer free blood pressure checks for eligible over-40s, with no appointment normally needed.
- Not been invited? Contact your GP practice, or your local council.
Book it like a board meeting. This is not medical advice — speak to your GP about your own results.
